About

I have always been fascinated by the idea of the boundary between fiction and reality, starting from Plato’s cave theory to Picasso’s constructions to Fontana’s spatialism to most recently the work of Julia Crabtree & William Evans who examine the relationship between the body and the screen. I’m interested in the picture ‘frame’, the line of where fiction ends, the ‘fourth wall’, the props/sets and events happening off-camera in film.
My most recent artworks are inspired by my personal experience of working on film sets. After having spent the last two years on various film sets as an extra, I have observed the tools filmmakers use to create fictional reality. Green/blue screens, polystyrene sets, costumes, make-up, platforms, dollies, props, MDF ‘marble’ flooring, endless scaffolding, cranes, CGI, cyberscanning (there are virtual cyber mini me’s in two films already).
Since university my practice has evolved from traditional oil painting to interactive work to video. I still have the compulsion to paint with oils. I start off by creating my own frame resembling backdrops (greenscreens) used for filmmaking and use parts of the finished painting as green screen for video.
The paintings are expressive paintings full of energy. They are produced using a palette knife working with a limited but distinct colour scheme of blues, greys, browns and greens, broken up with contracting specs of bright colours. Each painting is made to a high standard using high quality art materials based on an abstract looking landscape
I am now working on using both painting and cinematic techniques.
